Time of Use
Time of use is designed to help homeowners save money by optimizing energy use based on electricity rates that vary throughout the day.
 | This mode gives homeowners greater control over the system; however, it requires a carefully planned schedule to ensure optimal performance. If not set up correctly, the system may not function as expected. |
 | In some areas, Utility companies may limit customization options for the TOU operating mode. |
How it works:
- Peak Hours (Expensive Electricity)
- The system discharges stored battery power to power your home, avoiding costly grid electricity.
- If solar is available, it is used first before tapping into battery storage.
- Off-Peak Hours (Cheaper Electricity)
- The system charges the batteries using either solar energy or lower-cost grid electricity.
- If needed, home appliances can run on grid power since rates are lower.
- Solar Integration
- During the day, solar energy is used to power the home and charge the batteries.
- Any excess energy is stored for later use instead of being exported to the grid (unless net metering is beneficial).
Benefits of TOU Mode:
- ️ Reduces Electricity Costs – Avoids using expensive electricity during peak hours.
- ️ Maximizes Battery Value – Uses stored energy strategically to optimize savings.
- ️ Solar – Ensures solar energy is used efficiently for self-consumption and peak-time savings.
Example of TOU Optimization:
Peak (4 PM – 9 PM) → Use battery power instead of expensive grid energy.
Off-Peak (9 PM – 6 AM) → Charge batteries from the grid (if solar isn’t available).
Midday (10 AM – 3 PM) → Use solar power for home + charge batteries.
What does Off-peak and On-peak mean?
These terms are used to identify the price of electricity based on your tariff, see the definitions below:
- Super Off-Peak – The lowest electricity rates of the day.
- Off-Peak – Energy prices are low but not at their lowest.
- Mid-Peak – Electricity rates are moderate.
- On-Peak – The highest electricity prices of the day.

Enabling Time Of Use
| 1. Open the Franklin WH app and tap on the settings icon | 2. Tap "mode" | 3. Scroll down and tap the arrow to get to the settings page |

4. Set your reserve battery level (during normal operation the system will not discharge more than this percentage) | 5. Tap " TOU Settings" | 6. Select your utility company and tap "next" |

Rate - Updating, adding and removing
| In the TOU settings page, tap"Edit" | Scroll down and tap "Edit" on the rate option | On the next screen, you can edit the existing buy and sell rates, if blank, you may need to contact your utility company and then click next |

Seasons - Updating, adding and removing
| In the TOU settings page, tap"Edit" | Scroll down and tap "Edit" | On the next screen, you can edit the existing seasons or add a new one, once you have completed this step, tap next to create or edit the schedule |

Creating your schedule
| Tap the three dots of the sample "time block" | Select the duration of the time block and select the rate of the electricity | Once all of your time blocks have been set, tap " Next" |

Advanced settings
Tapping advanced on the settings page will enable you to customize what the system does depending on the rates you set (Off-peak, Mid-peak, On-peak), these options are pre-set and will be different depending on the rate you are editing.
